Letter from the President - July 2008
The Revd Anne Aldridge
President
Dear Members,
Please do read this news letter as it has some important information for all College members....
a) Professional Supplement
The attendees at the AGM voted in favour (63 for, 2 abstentions) of the proposal sent by the NPC to all membership earlier this year. The supplement is set at £20 per annum for whole time chaplains and £10 for those who are part time and will be commenced from January 2009. It is hoped that the additional supplement will, amongst other things, provide funds for bursaries and also to update the CHCC website.
b) Professional Agenda
Further to the many discussions over the past seven years with regard to moving forward to professional registration for healthcare chaplains the meeting also voted in favour (64 in favour, 1 abstention) of the creation of a new body. The new venture is to be called the UKBHC (United Kingdom Board for Healthcare Chaplains) and will comprise of the four UK-wide professional bodies; SACH (Scottish Association of Chaplains in Healthcare), AHPCC (Association of Hospice and Palliative Care Chaplains), NIHCA (Northern Ireland Healthcare Chaplains Association) and CHCC. Its remit will be four-fold; to hold a professional register, to continue to promote and encourage chaplaincy education and development, a fitness to practice panel and a group of advisors to chaplaincy posts. You can find the full PowerPoint presentation from the AGM on the CHCC website. A new website for the Board is planned and expected to 'go live' on October 1st 2008.
c) CHCC Journal
The current Journal editorial board met with members of the Executive committee to think about the future of the Journal. It was agreed by all that the Journal is a valuable asset to the College and that many people (not just those who are college members) appreciate it. Since Simon Harrison resigned as the editor other members of the team have tried to keep the journal going but have found this difficult without an editor. It has also been difficult to gain sufficient
articles. Please could I encourage all of you to think about sending something to the editorial team for publishing in our Journal? The team is always happy to discuss ideas or to help authors with an article. There are guidelines in the Journal as to how to present something.
As an interim measure we have appointed a guest editor for the next edition which will be sent out in December. The guest editor is Steve Nolan (chaplain@pah.org.uk).
The following Journal will be in print June 2009. Please send all potential articles for this edition to the editorial team (via Steve's email address as above) by 1st October 2008.
Also if anyone would like to become involved with the Journal please do contact either Steve or me (anne.aldridge@addenbrookes.nhs.uk).
d) Vice President
Jayne Shepherd who has served the CHCC excellently as both its Vice President and the organiser of the last four Summer conferences stepped down from both roles at the AGM. Jayne has been appointed as the incumbent of a church in Knutsford, Cheshire and will commence this new phase of her ministry in the Autumn. Although we are delighted at Jayne's new appointment we will be sad to lose her not only as a fellow colleague but also as a friend. A token of our appreciation for all Jayne's hard work was presented to her during the conference formal dinner. The Executive and NPC will be considering her replacement in due course.
These are the main issues arising for the college currently but please do check out the website for more information about the things I have raised but also to read the excellent presentations given by the speakers at what was an inspiring conference in Cardiff. We look forward to our second annual conference of the year, to be held 27-29 October 2008 at Hinsley Hall, Leeds, and organised by the mental health resource group.
Please do not hesitate to be in contact if you require any further information or wish to discuss other issues. Thank you to everyone for all the support and encouragement I have received over the first six months as President.
Every blessing to all
Anne Aldridge
